Joseph Hawkins, I have just received information from the County of Davis that the Mormons have driven the Citizens of Davis from their homes, burnt their houses, destroyed their property, have reduced to ashes the town of Gallatin the County Seat of Davis County, including the Clerks office, Post Office and all the Public records - the Citizens of Davis have requested of the Executive protection and to be Reinstated in their homes, orders have been paid for two thousand men to be raised for this the Service, the quota to be raised from your regiment in One Company of One hundred Mounted Riflemen, each man to furnish him- self with at least 50 Rounds of Ammunition and with at least fifteen days provisions, You will Cause these troops to be raised immediately and to Rendezvous at the City of Jefferson on the 1st day of Next Month (November) they will elect their own offices. HEAD QUARTERS OF THE MILITIA, ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, CITY OF JEFFERSON, June 25th, 1839. The Volunteers and Militia who have been engaged in the service of the State during the years 1837 and 1838, are notified that the Commander- in-Chief has succeeded in obtaining one-half of the funds appropriated to the payment of said troops; and that the residue will be obtained on or before the first day of October next. Until which time a portion of the troops must remain unpaid. The Commander-in-Chief, therefore, directs the Paymaster General of the State of Missouri to proceed immediately to make payment to the said troops, according to law, by counties; commencing at the county of Franklin; noti- fying the troops in advance of the time and place each payment will be made.
